Hiking in and around Rotterdam
Rotterdam does not have a real historic center, however you can still do very fascinating walks. With or without a guide you’ll discover street art and progressive architecture. You can do nature walks just outside of the city, such as the Kralingse wood.
Green woodpeckers and storks
South of Rotterdam you can do some fine hiking in the ‘Hoge Bergse Bos’, a hilly wooded area. This green area was mostly formed spontaneously. Make sure that you check out the rougher parts of the nature reserve. Here you will find a variety of breeding birds. A walk in the Kralingse wood is a must when you visit Rotterdam. In this vast nature reserve you can walk around the Kralingse lake. In the forest you may see, among other things, green woodpeckers, kingfishers and storks.
Art and the history of water transport
The city of Rotterdam developed several interesting walking routes. In the center you’ll walk along public art from artists such as Zadkine and Rodin. You will learn all about the modern architecture such as the cube houses of Piet Blom. You can discover a lot about the water transport history in the Scheepvaartkwartier, a neighborhood of Rotterdam. You can walk through and old piece of Delft in Rotterdam in the historic Delfsharbor. These cities have been connected with each other since the 15th century.
