Hiking in the 'Green Heart'
In the ‘Green heart’ you will mostly walk through the farmland of the Randstad. Meadow areas and ponds alternate. The great thing about this area is that you come across small cheese farms where you can get a tour and taste some cheese. You can see all sorts of grassland birds in this landscape.
Meadows and local products
The land of Wijk and Wouden, an area between Leiden, Alphen aan den Rijn and Zoetermeer, is worth a visit. Hiking trails lead you through the meadows with cows, along old Dutch villages and farms with delicious local products such as cheese. You can choose for a marked hiking route or you can create your own.
Courtyards and rivers
The city Gouda is situated in the green heart and offers really nice tours through the historic city center. With or without a guide, you will find medieval highlights, special alleys and courtyards. You can learn all about the rivers that flow in the city, which made the city rich during the golden age. Don’t forget to visit the Harbormuseum, the Tolhuis museum and the St. John’s Church.
