Hiking through the 'Bollenstreek'
March trough May is the perfect time to visit the bulb area, also known as the Bollenstreek, and walk through the stunning flowers. The flower bulbs, for which the region is famous, will have bloomed which gives the region a unique colorful sight. When you’re in the area you should visit the Keukenhof as well.
Flowers and inner city
The bollenstreek is located between Hillegom and Leiden and has vast fields with flower bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. While walking around in the region you will smell beautiful smells during flowering. West of the bollenstreek is Noordwijk where you have beautiful dunes and beaches. There are several city walks in Leiden which will show you the historic inner city. You will pass the University building, courtyards and birth houses of famous local people such as Rembrandt van Rijn.
The Keukenhof
The absolute highlight of the bollenstreek is the Keukenhof, this place usually opens at the end of March. All the different flower types from the region will bloom together. It’s a colourful theme park that attracts annually thousands of tourists. A visit to the Keukenhof itself is already a day hike. If you prefer some more peace and quiet you can also walk through the Keukenhofforest. This forest is an ancient dune and mostly has oak, beech and lots of peace and quiet. If you look closely you may see small animals such as foxes, owls and rabbits.
