Walking in northern Limburg area
The many different landscapes of northern Limburg creates an unique experience for hikers. In a relatively small area you will find different type of landscapes, such as shifting dunes, stream valleys and the Maas banks.
Maasduinen national park and the Groote Peel
Maasduinen national park is the longest river dunes area of the Netherlands and is located in between Arcen and Wellerlooi. You can hike in a beautiful nature area of over 4000 km, known for it’s so called parabolic dunes and rare animals and plants. In the Groote Peel you can walk around in springing peats and sand ridges. There are routes available which will lead you along the Meerbanksblaak lake. You have a perfect view of this special landscape from the bird observation and the observation tower.
Maas and ‘Lourdes’
There is a wide variety of possible walking routes. Several municipalities delivered a contribution to this. You will pass through cities, such as Venray, Peel and Maas, Roerdalen and Gennep, during your hikes. Along the way you’ll walk plenty of times along the Maas river. You can visit sights such as the moated castle, Castle Well, from the 15th century. The famous Venlo Town Hall is also worth a visit. Don’t forget the cave of Lourdes in the village of Tienray.
