Discover Saxony-Anhalt

Culture

When you’re in  Saxony-Anhalt and you like both walking and culture, you should do the Romanesque route. This runs right through the state and connects 80 Romanesque cathedrals, churches, palaces, monasteries and fortresses with each other. In one route you walk through the Romanesque (construction)art. Absolute highlights are the church treasures of Halberstadt and Quedlinburg (both listed on the Unesco World Heritage list). They will give you an unique perspective on the past 2000 years.

For the archaeology lovers amongst us, there is the ‘Himmelswege’. This impresses with the Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte (museum for prehistory) in Halle and the original Sky disc of Nebra, the world’s oldest Solar Observatory in Goseck.

Hiking

Walking is an unforgettable experience in the Harz nature park. One of the most popular walking and hiking routes is the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg which runs through the nature park. The Harzer Wandernadel, a project that was set up in 2006, allows you to discover the Harz in all its facets. The Hexentanzplatz in Thale, the Brocken (highest mountain in the Harz with 775m) or the Unesco protected world heritage site Rammelsberg near Goslar. You can choose the length and type of walking route with the hiking pass and the map material. When you visit enough places and collect the stamps, you will receive a hiking pin.

Wine region

The southern part of the state is very popular for wine lovers. The Saale-Unstrut wine region is located here, Germany’s most northern located wine region. The primary grape varieties used are Weißer Burgunder, Riesling and Spätburgunder. The grapes combined with the balanced climate and the experienced hands of the vintner conclude in a high quality wine.
